Make Your Own Polka Dot Flower Pots
“Making Polka Dot Flower Pots have got to be one of the easiest ways to dress up your old terracotta pots. Yet aren’t they stunning?”
Cornwall is a beautiful place to be, especially at this time of year, the sun is shining brightly and there’s not a cloud in the sky. With its beautiful beaches, far-flung landscapes and idyllic small villages, everywhere you turn there is something wonderful to catch the eye. So off we went for an early evening drive after work, when the air was a little cooler.
We ended up stopping off in Boscastle a beautiful little fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall. We wandered down the waterfront where there was a lovely breeze and then back up through the shops ending up in the pottery shop about ten minutes before closing. You simply can’t keep me out of pottery shops, anyway I digress. Whilst in the pottery shop I noticed some cute little mugs covered in dots, simple, but stunning none the less. Hmm I thought, now they would look great on flower pots, all sizes of course
So here I am, home again and the project begins Polka Dot Flower Pots or Dotty Pots as my husband calls them.
Project Polka Dot Flower Pots
I have discovered that there are a great many ways to add your dots, from stamping the dots on, stenciling them, drawing them freehand or simply sticking on stickers.
Just remember before beginning any project with your pots that you will need to prepare them properly first.
#1 – Basic Polka Dot Flower Pots
This one has been created by adding white vinyl stickers on a colorful base coast then varnished to seal, they have decided to leave the rim of the pot plain and make a set of symmetrical dots.
Whereas these two sets have used varying sized dots, all over the pots.
There are lots of ways you can apply dots to your pots once you have base coated.
- For larger dots, you can cut circles out of paper or fabric and glue on.
- Use Stencils to make perfectly symmetrical dots
- You can use stampers – these can be me made from virtually anything really, even a pool noodle for large dots
- Or simply paint them on by hand.
Just remember to clear seal your pots afterward if you want your designs to last.
So there you go basic Polka Dot flower Pots.
#2 Add Some Depth and Texture To Your Dotty Pot
The first one was created with layers of paint. First, paint on your dots and then when the first layer is dry add another. Gradually building up layers to give depth.
The second is made by gluing gems around the pot and they have used a glitter paint to “bling” up their pot.
#3 Decoupage The Dots On Your Pots
Apply images to your pots using decoupage. For this, you could use any images with dots on from fabric, wrapping paper or even napkins.
#4 Try Adding Some Stripes
Add some stripes and vary up the sizes of your dots.
#5 Or Just Get Really Creative with Your Dotty Pattern
If you are feeling creative, design a picture with your dots. Go wild and have fun.
This type of painting is called Mandala art. You can get an excellent tutorial on how to paint Mandala over at Art Is Fun.
So there you have it Polka Dot Flower Pots, simple to make, but masses of fun.
